Glam and Chic Birthday Desserts

A couple of weeks ago we celebrated my mother in law's 60th birthday and threw her a big surprise party.  It was so much fun to plan and one of my tasks was to arrange for the birthday desserts.  Our theme had a touch of Hollywood Glam so we wanted something that was sophisticated and maybe even a little bit sparkly.

You can't have birthday desserts without cake, it just wouldn't be the same.  Surprisingly this was a little more stressful than I anticipated.  The surprise party was a few hours away and all of the local bakeries in that area were booked out for a couple of months.  So I called around to find someone in my area who could make cakes.  I emailed them photos of what I was wanting, went in and explained it to the girl that took my order, and talked to the cake designer on the phone.  Apparently that wasn't enough because this is not at all what I was picturing.

However, although it wasn't nearly what I hoped for they still turned out pretty, simple and elegant.  What the photo isn't showing you is that each cake was dusted with silver glitter (that is edible of course) and they tasted delicious.  The chevron cake was a lemon raspberry cake and the small square cake was a vanilla cake with chocolate ganache filling.

In addition to ordering the cakes I also had to find cake stands.  Anyone out there ever try to find square cake stands that didn't cost more than $50 a pop?  I searched high and low for things I could use to make my own cake stands.  Finally I found these silver and gold chargers at World Market.  I know they say they aren't meant to eat off of but it was all I could find.  I then ran over to Marshalls and selected a mercury glass candle holder and bowl that happened to match quite nicely for the base of my cake stands.

Since I had to transport the cakes myself I had them put the cakes in boxes to travel with.  Then once at the hotel I had their chef move the cakes onto the chargers as carefully as he could.  I did not glue the chargers to their bases which worked out perfectly.  I could keep the cakes in the fridge until the party started and just place them on top of the bases.  It also makes storing these pieces a lot easier.

Finally I had these cookies special ordered to add variety to the birthday desserts.  We have an awfully talented cousin if I do say so myself.  A couple months back this cousin and her husband happened to be vacationing near where we live and I got to look through her portfolio over dinner.  I knew that night I wanted her to make cookies for this special event.

I couldn't be happier with how they turned out.  She lives back east, made the cookies on a Saturday night, mailed them across the country to us on a Monday, they arrived on Wednesday and we took them up to the party with us on Friday.  Only one cookie broke in transport and they were the best tasting cookies I've ever had AND as soft as if they had just come out of the oven... even though they were a almost a week old.

Again you can't see it but the silver and gold had some shimmer to it.

Overall the birthday desserts were a huge success and added some elegance to the party decor.
